The problem with the Eastern Suburbs railway is that the tunnels are only just bigger than the trains I think. When you look out the window the wall seems inches away. Nowhere for the noise to go.
I've realised now probably the only non-standard gauge railway I've been on is Zig Zag! (excepting non-railways like monorails etc). _________________ 26 March 2011... can't come quick enough.

Dusting off the memory (or possibly popping it out of pickling solution)
Actually, it's all too hard.
I'm glad I went and did
-3801 Silver star, so much new and interesting trackage, all the while with an esky at my feet.
-A nuthouse QLD trip many years ago. Did the entire north coast, Mt isa, Gulflander, Savannahlander to Cairns, yaraka goods. Covered a lot of miles in 2 weeks.
-Mildura and Murrayville in 2002
-last train to Foster (vic)
-Fort William to Mallaigh by steam (UK)
I regret never doing
-Steam Melbourne to Adelaide just before the end of BG.
I really want to do
-Sandy Hollow line. There was a tin hare trip last year, full out before I even got close to booking.
I'm off to do
-Budapest to places south
-Eurostar

Quite a few regrets here too, most of which are utterly impossible because I wasn't born yet or happened when I was a kid:
- never got past Toogoolawah on the Brisbane Valley - last tour ran in 1988 before I was interested.
- would have loved to have seen Brisbane's trams in their full glory. Time machine fantasy is going back to about 1960 and assassinating Clem
- in NSW, would have loved to have seen the height of the age of steam. 36s and 38s on the Newcastle Flyer, garratts on heavy coalies.
- In QLD - the rack railway at Mt Morgan.
- SA/NT - the 3'6" to Alice Springs, and the old NAR out of Darwin. Just love the ambience of outback lines.
Overseas regrets:
- would have loved to have seen the 3'6" system in Newfoundland, Canada - now completely removed - the provincial Government sold its soul for a couple of hundred million CA$ of highway funding and now there isn't a single mile of operating rail on the island. Same thing happened on Prince Edward Island as well, and I sometimes wonder if Newfoundland's fate is what awaits Tasmania.
- the electric lines of the Milwaukee Road in Washington - all gone now.
- the Pacific Electric "Red Cars" of Los Angeles - would have loved to have seen LA when it was the home of one of the greatest urban rail operations in the world.
- the Woodhead route from Manchester to Sheffield in the UK. 1500V DC mainline electrification.

Funny thing is I don't regret not travelling on X, Y or Z branchline: I regret not seeing them, even if by car. I missed due to my age the era of being able to travel anywhere by rail as a paying non-tour passenger and even in tours in Victoria even travelling at all on most lines is an impossibility now I have the disposable income to do so.
I'm probably the oldest of this generation of railfans - dwindling as it is - that simply would rather get in a car and have a look at a location or a branchline (or what's left of it) than try to travel it on a tour. I was lucky to go where I have on tours and passes (last Leongatha pass, Maryvale behind a G and then a Y, Oaklands, Maryborough-Ararat) when I did, but I was probably too young to really appreciate it.
I'm much more pleased that I chased certain trains like the massive grain lashups of 2003-2004, a Dookie grain with a P class, pre SG Adelaide freights, V/Line orange everywhere, Spotswood sand trains and briquettes.
I haven't travelled overseas (finances, then a young family has prevented this) as yet, so there's a lot of unfinished business overseas... _________________ Get a fucken move-on

Here is a list of what is difficult to do now:
Redfern to Darling Harbour, Wentworth Park and on to Chullora and back via Flemington and Strathfield to Redfern Steam hauled.
Central West Express when hauled by 44 then 46 from Lithgow down.
Silver City Comet from Orange to Dubbo.
The Original Indian Pacific from Lithgow to Bathurst one night.
Tin Hare from Parkes to Tullamore (Tottenham Branchline) and a mixed train on the same line wherein the last carriage (with me in it) became separated.
Tin Hares from Sutherland to Heathcote.
Well done the rest of you!! _________________ There are three kinds of people in this world. Those who can count and those that can't.

It's a quiet afternoon.
NSW:
All the current Sydney suburban lines, all the car sheds, Eveleigh, Elstons, Lavender bay, Manitrain/Clyde Dn & Up yards, Botany (inc the Ampol siding at Gelco), Meeks Rd, Rozelle/White bay, Enfield/DELEC, Chullora workshops, Trackfast, Elcar, Chullora Ind, Pipita (before Olly Pk), Sandown, Leightonfield, Yennora, Glenlee. Sydney to: Bomaderry, Inner Harbour, Outer Harbour, Unanderra - MossVale, Canberra, Picton - Buxton. Don't think I've been south of Demondrille but I have been out to Cowra from there. West as far as Blayney, Clarence Colliery. Sydney - Moree inc BMD yards and Port Waratah. Never been past the first station on the line into Nukes. North Coast right to Brisbane, also to Murwillumbah.
Vic:
Albury - SSS on the BG. SSS - Ballarat. City Loop to: Balaclava, Glen Waverley, Williamstown, Werribee, Craigieburn.
QLD:
Border Loop - Roma St on SG. Roma St to Beenleigh. That's it, I think.
SA
Some TransAdelaide action, Grange, Outer Harbour, Belair, Noarlunga, Mawson Interchange.
WA
Some grain train action out of Katanning.
NT
Never, never been there.
Tas
Nope.
I haven't even tried to travel over all the NSW lines, really doesn't float my boat. It's not the cost that's holding me back from spending hours on Clink to fill in the gaps there...
