R766 has entered Dorrigo MKII. Don't expect to see it out and about anytime in the next 10 years. The consortium who own this loco, while forward thinking about gauge conversion; certainly didn't think of what would become of the loco in NSW. It's entered a black hole and won't come back out in a hurry.

Oh, and Kev, do us a favour and stop using them upside down question marks. I'm dyslexic enough without having to see them.

Fuckin don't start me. You Mexican gunzels should be up in arms about this. The next time she ever leaves that fucking cesspit that the Mr Ms and Mr Rs spawn in will be on a low loader back to Victoria without ever having turned a wheel under her own power. It's a fucking disgrace that those "young champs" as they call themselves are allowed (or rather, ignored by authorities) to play with 9 heritage listed SMR 10 class, let alone such a large and beautiful machine as an R. Interesting fact? I looooooove Rs. I could watch those vids of 01 and various Rs paralleling until my eyeballs start looking like your Gran's tits. But I've never seen one in the flesh. I live 10 minutes away from Rothbury. Think I'll ever see it? Not on your fucking life.

Problem is as far as I can tell is R766 is relatively* unique in Mexican preservation in the fact that it's privately owned by a consortium - the other R's bar one are owned by VicTrack and allocated to the various groups sako will probably know more about this and will correct any fuckup or misconception about what is/might have happened that he can. Or more likely tell me I'm full of shit.

Way I see it is that in April 2005, R766 was leased by R766 Group, which is a private shareholding that bought the loco in the 1980's after a series of ideas to run tourist trains with SAR 500 class vehicles and R766 fell on its arse. SteamAge or some shit. I think. Anyway, when West Coast turned up on the scene, they decided that it would be the tits to run steamers on selected Warrnambool passes along with R711, which was dragged out of plinthness at Bendigo.

They had all sorts of mechanical modifications - oil burners, Lempor exhausts? twin funnels and all sorts of stuff, ran them for a while until one of them threw a rod or some shit at 115km/h.

So when WCR folded, the consortium took it back to Steamrail until some bloke from Branxton rocked up and offered to pay for its restoration (it was pretty knackered) and regauge it and send it to New South and as one of the shareholders trumpeted at the time to haul a full Southern Aurora set from Melbourne non-stop to Pokolbin full of wine-bibbers eagerly ready to get pissed and other such schemes - and it would be done in a year. Me being the dickhead I was, promptly called bullshit on the whole thing in such a way to piss a number of people off, and got flamed back for daring to criticise such a great plan and I would be eating my words as R766 steamed triumphantly across the Murray on Anzac Day 2006 to make lots of lovely money for Rothbury and what a great plan it was indeed and how dare I criticise such a visionary - but I've so far been right.

Turned out that West Coast had arsed up the locomotive, thus delaying the (quite good) rebuild, and it took until now for it to be somewhat ready - and even so the triumphant steaming across the Murray was a trip at night on the back of a truck in three bits with pigeon shit all over the boiler barrel, where it might be reassembled: but who knows?

*R711 is also outside of VicTrack: but it's owned by the Greater City of Bendigo and leased, like Y112 which is owned by Ballarat Historical Society, better known as Sovereign Hill.

Oh well, shit happens and arseholes cause it! Would be nice to see R 766 re-emerege from the black hole but by the way things look, it'd have to be a big snow blizzard in hell by the way things seem at the moment.
I think it was R 766 that spat the rod at Little River

To do the upside down ¿ hold down alt then 168 on the number pad but make sure the num lock button is pressed before hand. I do them as to be different from the rest of the humans!!

Just goes to show, the gunzels with the money aren't necessarily then ones you want in charge of the assets.

I can feel a typical Riccardo sociological post coming on:

Question - does Australia lack the sort of 'genteel' railfanning that has multi-millionaire white collar types who go and buy their own locos that is so common in the UK?

We seem to have lots of ex-train drivers and stuff who think buying a loco is just another tinkering project for their back shed. Doesn't matter if the thing sits in bits for a few decades, or rusts in an open field. Will get a round tuit one day.

Interesting question.

I know that Colin Rees (of CRT fame) owns the two ex-Melbourne Gasworks Decauville locomotives up at Puffing Billy. Puff seem to use them a bit - 861 more-so that "Carbon". So the "Black hole" phenomina isn't all that prevailent here in Victoria.

Correction to that post, R766 Inc had owned the R for some time, they I think commenced leasing it to Rothbury...

AVT and SteamAge were the two original companies. The loco was leased to WCR in an arrangement that should have seen R700 restored (very long story). Part of the reason for leasing 766 to WCR was to see it run more often than it did with SRV. Ironic considering what happened when 766 was with WCR.

The original approach was to BCC to get 711. BCC told them that the loco was to be based in Victoria with regular visits to Bendigo. This led Branxton toward 766. One idea at the time had 766 being sold outright to Branxton with money raised to go into A2 ex Echuca. This didn't happen and a lease arrangement was agreed upon.

766 will be the first VR steam engine on SG. I dunno when it'll happen cause I've given up on all things mainline heritage. Too much bullshit and to be quite frank I have better things to spend my time on.

The one point no one seems to have picked up on is that all the surplus broad gauge parts from 766 will be put under 700 moving it somewhat closer to operation. (tender, driving wheels etc) This was done to try to honour the original 766-700-WCR deal of years before.

There were other delays with manufacturing and documentation. There were also issues with crewing and loco mods. The scope of the project also changed as things were found in stripping down the engine. It's like peeling an onion.

I must also note that my knowledge of what's current with 766 stopped mid last year. Fucked if I know what's going on now.
