Gday fellow Bastards,
I'm trying to work out whether the Hume Highway ever crossed the railway line at Springhurst or not.
Looking on Google Maps, Smith Road looks like it could have been part of the Hume Highway, however, there's no obvious crossing place at the southern end of town.
Does anyone know whether the Hume Highway used to cross the line here and where it went? Or perhaps is there a list of level crossings from the 1950s or earlier that might help?
Stick that one up your arse!

As far as I know, no.
The 1953 General Appendix and 1967 Signal Books (and all previous GA's and Signal Books) had a list of pretty much all level crossings in the State, and I can't recall Springhurst being listed.
However I will check next time I am near one. _________________ Get a fucken move-on

As far as I know, the Hume Highway's always been on the east side of Springhurst. I know at Glenrowan, it crossed the railway twice. _________________ "Who dropped their guts?"

Between Springhurst and West Wodonga, the Hume originally crossed the rail line four times.
These locations were:
- Wenkes Road, SW of Chiltern
- North of Barnawartha Station
- Just east of the current Murray Valley Highway interchange
- Subway between Murray Valley Highway and McKoy Street junctions
The deviations to take the Hume along the southern/eastern side of the rail line for its entirity were done in conjunction with the construction of the SG Line in the early 1960s.
As for Glenrowan - Kev is spot on. The first deviation here was constructed a bit earlier though, in 1956-58.
If Google had decent aerials for Victoria then this research would be easier
Wrt the Springhurst, prior to the bypass being constructed in the 1990s, the Springhurst-Rutherlgen Road crossed the railway line south of the station - not sure if this was a level crossing or grade-separated.

Wenkes brings back memories of the night my dad had to go out a certify 2 dead blokes cleaned up by the SoP on that crossing. Dad was the local Chiltern GP back in the 50s.
