After hunting high & low whilst in Vanuatu last month, I managed to locate a picture of a railway/tramway line that was run along the foreshore of Port Vila beach that ran north from Port Vila to a point unknown. The picture was taken in 1942 but there are no remnants of the line to be found.

I asked around the town but nobody seems to of known much about it. Any ideas anyone-Google bought up fuck all.

sounds to me like it could of been a military serviced line, much like how there was originally a 3rd line forming a triangle on the Gawler/Penfield line that was removed to the best of my knowledge sometime in the late 40's/early 50's

The fence line and what looks like the concrete base for a signal gantry are still in place either beside the Gawler Central line or on the old route.

You could try asking on the LRRSA Yahoo group. http://au.groups.yahoo.com/group/LRRSA/ They know about a lot about the island railways of the Pacific.

409, when I was last in Adelaide in 2007 I went out to try find anything, not having much time on my hands I didn't find anything, but if you could confirm with a photo it would be appreciated.

Through the State Archives and 18 months of a mate searching for it, he eventually found a general plan of the layout that existed. The plans weren't commissioned by the SAR but by the Department of Defence, Last known information pertaining to the line is dated May 1953.

Stick that one up your arse!, Troy

Part of the earthworks for the triangle used to be visible in the first paddock that you came to out there on the Gawler line after leaving Salisbury, you could clearly see it curve away from where it joined the mainline, this would be just before the crossover near GMH, it was in that general area that it would have rejoined the down North line! Cool

The closet I saw to Gawler in Vanuatu was a VG Valiant hardtop. Wink

Bit of a shame I didn't keep the paper that the picture was in, supposedly it was a WW2 construction but so far, I haven't found much else yet, more (possibly) to follow.
