|
|
I just saw the frontpage headlines and I thought you bastards would find this rather interesting:
http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/rees-seizes-the-controls/2008/10/07/1223145357300.html
For those bastards who are too lazy to read the full article, I'd be happy to summarise some of the juicy points for you:
#1 It looks like we might be going back to the good old days of having the State Rail Authority:
| SMH wrote: |
| The move back to a government authority was described last night as "fantastic" by the head of the Rail Tram and Bus Union, state secretary Nick Lewocki, who has campaigned on the issue since RailCorp's state-owned corporation structure was enacted in January 2004. |
#2 It also looks like Guards will be made redundant just like how it happened down there at the Melbourne MET:
| SMH wrote: |
TRACKWORK
- Replace guards with CCTV systems for drivers.
- Outsource all rail maintenance.
- Remove staff from poorly frequented stations.
- Hire specialised NSW Police to patrol trains.
- Invest in more CityRail security personnel to patrol CityRail trains.
The report recommends that all maintenance of carriages be outsourced, following the collapse of an agreement between RailCorp and the unions to reform CityRail's maintenance depots by October last year. |
#3 The Ivory Tower over at Central looks like it could go through some downsizing of Murwillumbah branch line proportions:
| SMH wrote: |
| The tribunal had independently discovered $480 million every year could be carved from the bloated RailCorp bureaucracy by 2012. In its latest report, it calculated that the reforms would save NSW $1 billion over the next four years. |
The NSW State Rail Authority always sounded nicer than stingy CostaCorp anyway! I guess we'll all see how this pans out eh?

The article includes:
The Boston Consulting Group report was meant to provide the direction for CityRail and urged the retrenchment of more than 1100 employees. The savings were to be spent on security, including specialised police to patrol trains and stations.
The report recommends that all maintenance of carriages be outsourced, following the collapse of an agreement between RailCorp and the unions to reform CityRail's maintenance depots by October last year.
But the Government has baulked at implementing the report's difficult front-line reforms, and instead, it has moved to shake up RailCorp's management.
So, as I understand it as a non-rail person, this all means:
- More direct day to day control of the railway system by politicians and their entourage of "hollow men".
- The reforms mentioned in that report are less likely to occur, (for better or worse, I don't know).
- The union is delighted, which usually means things will now mostly be run to suit the needs and wants of their members, not the traveling public.
Have I got that wrong? How does it affect 'brands' like Cityrail and Countrylink? How does it impact on TIDC? Does it mean a fundamental change, or is it just new boss, same middle management? _________________ Insects of the day spend their brief existence in reiterated coition, lured by the smell of the inferiorly pulchritudinous female possessing extendified pudendal verve in dorsal region (Ulysses, James Joyce).

This alarms me as I have tried for 3 years to get into the industry. I am to start mid next year as a guard, so what will happen now? I'm basicly going to be thrown out again?

The only safe railway occupation is a Driver.
If things go pear shaped as per my experience with PN grain you can always find another employer as Drivers are ALWAYS in Demand.
My Advise try to get on with a 2 bit operator like PN or Elshonko ect and cop it up the arse until you pass for driving then say fuck you, you bastards and get a job with a more stable operator! _________________ What you say here stays here!.

| I suppose it wouldn't hurt to put in a few applications around the traps for a driver traineeship.

Latest name change rumour in a long list of stupid suggestions/rumours.
Railcorp Authority.
I doubt anything will change soon.
This to me sounds like another smoke screen laid out to soften the blow of increasing fares.
They usually paint a very bad picture saying staff need to be cut, services slashed and prices increased. Then, when it comes time to put the price up, they say "tada!!!" We won't slash jobs etc, but need the price rise to keep them....
Same thing nearly everytime. _________________ No smart comment available.

| RailCorp Authority? That sounds pretty lame. Bring back SRA I say - those were the good old days!! I miss the orange/red L7 logo... RailCorp Authority doesnt make sense either, because if they're wanting to de-corporatise something, they'd remove the "corp" from the name...

Was my first thought too, but it ain't gonna happen - you could hardly say they still serve or represent the entire state, could you?
MSGR maybe (Metropolitan Sydney Government Railways)? _________________ It's Better to die on your feet than to live on your knees - Oils.

Fuckin sorreeee for not thinking 1950's Dog, geez louise!
NSWGR is good - I'd be happy with either. Just none of this corporation bullshit. What was the NSWGR logo, just the NSW coat of arms with NSWGR under it, wasnt it?
You can still catch a train to Broken Hill - so that covers a lot of the state... Maybe the Silver City Comet can come back into service, since they still have the appropriate NSWGR signage
