I reckon it's time get the states to fuck off out of rail altogether. Let's form National Rail Australia (aka the NRA) to operate the lot.
I can already see CSAs, not to mention Transits, stomping around stations in the Illawarra with big NRA badges on their shoulders and packing serious iron on their belts. Warning signs going up around stabling yards saying, "Spray that can punk, and we'll spray you with lead". Inspirational posters in crib rooms featuring Charlton Heston with the slogan, "The NRA; get on board or get left behind". Trust me, we'd have bullet trains criss-crossing the country in no time.

Thats what happens when a socialist (or social democractic) party is run by nutjob conservatives (not all conservatives are nutjobs, mind you). I do personally have *some* hope in Rees, considering he's the first NSW Labor premier from the left faction since about World War Two if my political history serves me correctly. Though those previous dogs have left him in a terrible fiscal mess. No matter who runs NSW - it will take years for all of Costa's dog shit to be cleaned up. Anyways back to Rail, with Rees going ahead with the decorporatisation of Sydney Ferries now (ahead of possible privitisation -or- leasing to private sector and retaining government ownership, as suggested by the Libs) it appears feasible that a new 'brand' could be formed to run all 3 forms (maybe even others forms) of transport in Sydney, like the "Transport for London" mob. So we could get a "Transport for Sydney" brand or the Urban Transport Authority that covers rail, STA buses and Ferries could make a comeback.
