If you love the V sets, then you'll love the majority of the Jumbos which were designed and built around the same time by the same manufacturer. The lights and aircon vents are identical to the V sets and the lashings of fake timber havn't been held back either! The seats are also really good although they are more like bench seats with about 2inches of foam on them! Only difference is the powercars have three engines in them and have more grunt then an 830/48! Also unlike the V sets, you get whale noises from the air springs by the plenty and ofcourse, the front window seat! Anyway, these are the last in Adelaide built to the 'fuck vandalism' ideal.
The first series of Poxboxs were built with this idea in mind but as the later ones came on, the seats got worse and worse. _________________

I reckon the Sydney Electric Train Society (SETS) would still be running them on the odd occasion. Saw several U-Sets idle at Goulburn a few weeks back. Wouldn't mind buying one .... _________________ Member Falls Creek 2018 Olympics Committee.

Well if someone's got the cash, why not!? You could replace the "CityRail" under all the logos with "RailBastard"!
Did they ever have diesel consists of the U-boats or were they only electric?
I have to agree with TheLoadedDog, the V-Sets were SRA's last good train. The only trains that appeal to me post V-sets are the G Sets and Endeavors - theyre the only ones with a reasonable level of comfort. I haven't tried out of the new OSCAR's tho but they look pretty average - just like a lemon.

RVR have a few U cars, which they haul up and down with a SMR 10 class! They don't look anywhere near as out of place as you's expect, but of course there's no guard's compartment.
There was nothing like the rattle of every window as you rushed into a tunnel to wake you up - back before they wrecked that with beclawats. _________________ It's Better to die on your feet than to live on your knees - Oils.

Well 409 I have to say I am now a fan of the Jumbo. I had some time to kill today so I thought I'd try it out... The front seat you tell me of is pretty good - definately not available on the V sets. I did notice though that one of the Jumbo carriages had some newer looking 90's decor with fancier looking black seat covers...

Only electric, but I believe they were designed originally to travel under their own er.. "steam" to Lithgow, and then be diesel-hauled to Orange. They were also supposed to have a buffet car.
In fact, some of this thinking went through to the V sets too - the period from the 1950s to the 1970s when U sets and V sets were designed was an era in which the general public's perception of distance changed a lot. Both trains were originally intended to have booked seating, first and second class carriages, and - as mentioned - a buffet in the case of the U sets. Somewhere along the way, the NSWGR woke up to the fact that these faraway destinations like Katoomba and Gosford were becoming outer commuter suburbs. I can still remember mum booking tickets for the Flyer to travel from Gosford to Central. It seems weird today. _________________ The idiot who, in railway carriages,

Whoah shit! Maybe one day people will be buying standard tickets to travel to exotic places such as Canberra, Bathurst and maybe even Port Macquarie...
It's interesting how the V set was planned to be booked seating only... It explains a lot of things about the train.

Canberra - Happenned for about 2 years in the 90s, with 1 train a day. Left about 5:30am, arrived in Sydney just after 9, IIRC left about 7pm for a roughly 11pm arrival in Canberra.
Bathurst - was the case in the 80s, with a change at Lithgow. Even went to Orange. Although it went away for a while, you can do it to Bathurst again now on the buses.
Port Maquarie - OK still waiting for that one. _________________ It's Better to die on your feet than to live on your knees - Oils.

Chillax AN1 - everythings related. On the subject of Poxbox windows - I'm starting to see a few roaming poxboxes with decent windows already and thats bloody awesome.
Back to NSW: I didn't know the standard ticket arrangement existed Bathurt/Orange and Canberra. These days you have to book tickets to catch the bus to Lithgow, well according to CityRails network map anyway...

Goolgarah, a couple of 3100 sets (and more specifically 3135/3136 and 3137/3138) have generally had cleaner windows then the rest of the fleet and have done so for some time. Noticed a particularly fogged up set at the back of the railcar depot earlier this morning but I didn't catch the numbers. _________________

You know, we evil admins from across the River Styx do actually have ways of remedying this situation. But, frankly, that's not the way to ask. You're welcome to try again, though. _________________ The idiot who, in railway carriages,
