With less than a fortnight 'till ARG take their bat and ball home, I don't imagine I'll find time to see them again. Luckily my last chase was an interesting one, and carried out in excellent weather.
3982 runs spot on time through Werai
Diverted via Sydney due to trackwork between Unanderra and Moss Vale, it coasts through Maldon
And finally heads south again, having dumped the 22s for another 31
A Tahmoor coalie (TM04), with a bit better variety on the pointy end than normal, also goes via Sydney. Note that push-pull is not needed as the train doesn't have to turn around at Tahmoor Colliery junction
TM04 snuck up on me at Stanwell park, so my best shot was a trailing one
While waiting for a real train to come, I have been known to take pics of DMUs and EMUs...
I also found some time to check out the old Bald Hill tunnel. No, I didn't go past the sign.
And fluke shot of the day, SPENO heading back to Sydney.
I intended on finishing the day in Inner Harbour, which would have been a very unique shot of 3982, but they've gone all security-concious since I was last there, so I couldn't get near the joint. There's a couple of shots through the fence on webshots though. _________________ It's Better to die on your feet than to live on your knees - Oils.

Nice shots Bwana. Is that Endeavour near the Glenlee junction?
Interesting spot at Stanwell Park - would have been from within the National Park, yeah? Pity about those trees in the way.
Speaking of ARG - reminds me that I should try getting a shot of that daylight train they run on the Main West on Saturdays that leaves Sydney around 2:30pm.

Somebody, the Endeavour appears to be at Maldon, going from the lighting on the 82 Class shot at the same location. _________________ Insert generic signature line here.

Ahh, thanks. I had based my guess based on the track in the background.

Apologies Somebody - I did reply yesterday but it seems to have gotten lost in the ether. The endeavour certainly is as Maldon (Lighting? ever thought to look for landmarks, like the 2 large trees at the edge of the cliff in the background Trent??)
Stanwell Park shots are indeed in the Illawarra Escarpment (or whatever it's called) NP, just off a walking trail between Coal Cliff and Stanwell Park (which I'm yet to do the northen 2/3 of). It's a fairly well known spot - Neety had (still does have?) her avatar from there, and I've got a few pre-electrification (and pre-those-bloody-trees) shots in old calenders and the like. _________________ It's Better to die on your feet than to live on your knees - Oils.

What's the story with the concrete shell inside the Bald Hill tunnel ? Problems with the structural integrity of the tunnel ? _________________ Member Falls Creek 2018 Olympics Committee.

My impression from looking up at the start of it is that the brickwork is either falling down or has gone completely. Can't really vouch for that though. Not far beyond that there was a section that appeared to have no brickwork at all - if I remember I'll upload another pic that shows what I mean. _________________ It's Better to die on your feet than to live on your knees - Oils.

As promised...
This is a shot at about a 45 degree angle above the concrete - the line at the bottom is the top of the concrete. It's not apparent in 2d near the middle, sitting above the concrete is a largish timber beam that appears to be burnt at the end. I assume you can see it, but wanted to clarify that that is sticking out horixontally, not vertically. _________________ It's Better to die on your feet than to live on your knees - Oils.

And I would have replied to this sooner had I actually been online!

Well known - but not used by that many! The issue there seems to be that trains are usually backlit, and there's usually stuff in the way.
Having said that, having a wander through the National Park once I did find this spot, for an angle that I haven't seen used before. Sun hadn't moved over the right side yet when I was there, but I'd try this one again:
(Hehe, that's what you can all expect to be seeing on all the Manildra trains starting from the 23rd!)

You'd be shooting pretty much due north there wouldn't you? Unless Stanwell Park makes it's way into the tropics I don't think you'll EVER get direct sunlight on that side of the train. Shame, 'cos apart from that it's a great shot. _________________ It's Better to die on your feet than to live on your knees - Oils.

Bugger - at least a rainy/cloudy day or trying a shot very early before the sun comes out would work, tho.
Excuse my ignorance (I know little about this subject), but how come at this time of year there are some locations where (at the right time of day) you can get a well-lit shot of a train shooting directly north? Confuses me.

The curvature of the Earth means that in summertime, the sun will rise and set towards the SE and SW respectively, despite the observer being in the Southern Hemisphere. This goes against all logic until you visualise it, with the Earth kinda falling away towards the southern horizon.
That said, it's not a HUGE effect. The sun still sets "in the West, kinda", but if you took a compass and marked a point due west on the horizon, the sun would go down clearly to the south of that mark. _________________ The idiot who, in railway carriages,

Well I got out for one more run. Sorry it's taken so long to get these up, went a bit heavy on the downloads last month and got restricted to 28.8kbps, which doesn't enthuse one to uploading pics.
L265, "Shoalhaven" prepares to leave the Shoalhaven - having fuelled up it waits and Bomaderry platform for the road north to shunt back on to the train.
Must have coupled up quickly, because we drove to Jasper's brush and only had to wait for 5 minutes...
The pace continued, but they were held at Bombo for what turned out to be their last single track pass
Then the troubles started - They must have been really caning it, because by the time we got to Dapto (where they were meant to wait an hour for a couple of passes), the station staff told us they were in Wollongong! So we jumped back in the car, Liam rang up Fred to find he had just left Helensburgh on an express train, so we had to make our wat to Thirroul to pick him up from there. Thanks to crazy amounts of traffic between Bellambi and Thirroul Fred easily beat us there - then we had to drive back through the same traffic to Bulli Pass. We saw the train off in the distance through Waterfall, but again traffic kept us well behind them. We decided to abandon an illawarra chase and head to Campsie
Traffic again saw them leave us for dead, but we managed one more shot of the detached locos moving around Clyde Yard
There weren't many gunzels farewelling ARG, but maybe this one should have taken the hint...
Some other stuff we saw...
