Have any bastards made their own beer (or continue to!)?
I do but use kits. I did, at one time, make it from boiling hops, etc. Back in the 'get your gear' from the health food shop days. Back in those days, the result was pretty rugged and would put you on your ear....then there was the next day! It all came from my dad who had his own dubious ("back in my day") methods.
Anyway, I just signed up on the Aussie Brewer forum. Ms Hub insists that we cut the grog budget and, thinking laterally, I figured to maintain the volumes and still fit the new draconian budget. Clever, huh?
However, Ms Hub may yet have more to say.....
Do we have any other brewers out there????

I brewed my own beer for about 5 years. The first home brew that you brew will be better than the commercial stuff that you buy. Further more, you don't get a hangover.
I brewed honey stout; James Squire & Stella Artour clones & finally a mix between those two but plenty of others in between. The James Squire/Stella was my ultimate brew.
It really is the most satisfying hobby & cheap; bloody cheap. I was ready to get the keg & fridge going when I gave it away.
I was drinking three long necks a night. It was just beautiful.
Blood test; liver in trouble. Dr asked if I was drinking too much or maybe I had a virus. Obviously I assured him it must be a virus.
Writing was on the wall. I don't know any home brewwer who has had the discipline to control his drinking over time. It's just so bloody good. (I'm not saying there isn't; I just don't know anybody)
Go for it, but remember the risk. _________________ Any club that wants me as a member, I don't want to join!! Groucho

My pop and uncle have been brewing in the backshed at Yamba for years, at one point there was tonnes of the stuff (could be argued the bottle washing and associated water stuff kept the back lawn alive thru the drought) they do a good brew, can't wait til Boxing Day when I'll be up there out the back having a few and trying to ignore the squabbling that you get when parents and their kids live together too long.... _________________ "Would either of you lovely ladies care to join me for a dutch oven?.."

My dad wanted to such a mate up about dodgy home brew (seems he had tasted his fair share and doubted them) and brought back two long necks, and he did, Rossco loved the stuff.
The risks jibbonpoint refers to seem to of happened in this case too, the uncle is on the stuff by 10am (everyday) and pop's got type 2 diabetes

I tried, and lost patience.
BUT
My neighbour has persevered and now produces a number of highly acceptable brews. Also, as mentioned earlier, the temptation is hard to resist. On hot summer evening, it was hell deciding who should get out of the pool and venture to the garage ( eighteen steps, including pool fence) and face the modified Kelvinator. Those two taps just invited you to pour off another round of foaming pints. It was deadly work sometimes. You had to sample some before heading back to the pool. No wonder Greenpeace dropped around one night. They were confused, but there had been a beached whale sighting 150k from the nearest beach......
Seriously, if you take the time to understand the process, and keep everything CLEAN...sterile clean, you will be rewarded.
Stick that one up your arse! _________________ There are three kinds of people in this world. Those who can count and those that can't.

I've brewed a home brand draught, with castor sugar, in PET bottles and the end result was great. In fact, it came second in a home brew comp. Needless to say they were horrified when they found out what it really was _________________ Friends, Cunts, Romanrymen: Lend me your ears!

One of my mates brewed a Gobbledok, tasted great, seemed like there was no difference a really good drop, until you stood up After two drinks the effects sort've snuck up on you and they were devastating. When tested it gave a % of somewhere around 13 _________________ Some people are like slinkies....they don't really have a purpose, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down the stairs.

If you follow the recipe, alcohol content is not a problem & you check it as you go, parkeshub. I'll dig out my old recipes if you like.

Nah, it was a good afternoon just a good bit of banter, a few beers and good company. Ms Hub was even impressed: "I thought you told me they were all bastards??? Didn't seem to be that way at all!!"

Yes, I'd be interested to see what you can come up with. I use a hydrometer to measure the alcohol content. I don't want to make the brew too alcoholic.
Liquorcraft seems to have an interesting range as well. What scares me about Liquorcraft is the spirit stills. Now, that could cause some serious damage.

Pick the brew you drink normally, go to a Brewshop (like Brewcraft, I guess). Tell them what you want & they will make recomendations. It'll cost you about $150 to set up. Don't skimp on equipment or you'll find it more difficult & you'll give it away.
The worst part of homebrewing is the need to maintain absolute cleanliness which used to entail washing the bottles each time after use & before filling. This is no longer necessary. There's a germicide that you dilute & fill a spray bottle. I used to rinse each bottle 3 times immediatly after emptying then spray the inside & store upside down suspended by the neck. Don't use a bottle tree because bacteria can form in the "branches."
When refilling, just get the bottle & refill it. After the brew, rinse all the gear & spray it, making sure that the complete surface area is coated with the germicide. It imparts no taste so rinsing afterwards isn't necessary. I must have brewed well over 100 brews & never had a problem with even even one bottle.
Make up an excel sheet, noting dates, recipe, number each brew & write the number on the bottle cap.
Temperature control whilst fermenting is important. I wrapped the carboyde in a blanket, used a heater that you can buy from the brew shop & attached a thermostat for winter. You need to find a cool spot in summer. You can buy a "stick on" thermometer. They don't seem to last long but if you continue you can get something more sophisticated.
I'll have to try & boot up the old computer to see if I can get more details. Unfortunately I didn't move the info with computers as I upgraded. _________________ Any club that wants me as a member, I don't want to join!! Groucho
