There may be sentimental loss in seeing the BG go, but I'm looking forward to seeing double track SG, good for 130km/h from Seymour to Wodonga. I'm surprised it's taken so long for them to get around to it.

It is a shame to see it go but I reckon the advantages it will bring on the Melbourne-Sydney run will be worth the expense of the project.

First up you can blame the cunts at Pacific National who saw it as just another excuse to wave their dicks around while they had a pissing contest with ARTC, holding out for more money and just basically making a fucking nuisance of themselves for several years.
Once they fled the scene under cover of darkness with their filthy lucre in hand it was The Victorian Government that held up the process, although it is thought that this came down to just one senior cunt in the Vic DoI who obviously hadn't a clue as to the significance of the decsision he was being asked to make.
Can't find the quote but at the time the handover to ARTC was announced Tim Fischer made some pretty candid, though indirect, remarks targetted at said individual.

Yeah, I made it in case you all didn't pick it up and wanted to know.
Good trip. Reminded me that the Ns were designed to haul the Overdue, not little four car N sets. _________________ If you stick 567 used postage stamps on a teatowel, tie it around your head like a bandanna and dance down Swanston Street singing "Pop goes the weasel" you'll feel ridiculous. And what a mighty fine job a single "N" class did on the Overdue. I remember in 1991 getting a cabride on the Melbourne-Serviceton leg. Loved it.

Fucken. Another thing I left my run too late for. I had always intended to catch the Worm to Albury, and then change to the BG - just to say I'd done it.
When is it?
Related Question: if I want a day trip from Melbourne on a loco-hauled BG service, where should I go? I want something guaranteed to not have a DMU turn up on the day. |
TLD, don't know if this will help, but a favourite day trip of mine from Melbourne is to Ararat and back taking the 'great circle' route of the Overland one way and V/Line the other way. Admittedly, you will get a Vlocity in one direction and a set of 1950s rolling stock hauled by an NR in t'other, but on the other hand, you can have up to 5 hours to spend in Ararat that, once you've gone to see the railway museum (at the station) you can spend having a boozy lunch before taking the train back to Melbourne.
Other loco-hauled routes I have travelled on include Warrnambool and Bairnsdale (only as far as Traralgon). As I have only lived in Victoria for three years, I consider this (and Albury a couple of times) pretty good going.
Still, if you're coming to Melbourne for a couple of days, I'm sure there's plenty of train-related activity to engage in to keep you occupied.

Jealous - have been wanting to do the Ararat round trip for a while. Never find a time when I'm awake enough on the Saturday morning or whatever to do it.
Q. Do the Vline tickets on the Overland within Vic sell out quickly? _________________ Virgil Caine is my name

Riccardo,
If you're interested in bunking off work for the day, it's a good trip to take. Are you interested in going - we could make up a non-foamy team on the round trip!
Seriously, it depends on which legs and which days on how booked the V/Line tickets sell. There's a lot of evidence that the Overland turns out a lot of people at Ararat for connecting coach services and gets a lot more pax off the same buses. The interchange is quite slick and coaches will wait for an overdue Overland, with an amazing 'pulse' of connecting coaches coming in and out of Ararat, all timed to connect with the Down Ararat Pass, Up Overland and Up Ararat Pass.

Haven't logged into here for months...
1. Albury Trip - went on it and loved it. Met lots of guys for the first time but would have liked to have placed more names to faces. Spent most of the trip in the Parlour Car.
2. Ararat Trip - did the round trip with my son at the start of the year. V/Locity out to Ararat and on paper we had 1 hr to go to Maccas for lunch. I was in the line at KFC with 30 mins to go and my son was waving frantically from outside. I figured he must have seen a goods coming ahead of the Overdue but it was our fucking train running early. Scrapped the idea of lunch and sprinted down the street to the platform. Just made it...
