Well I suppose I am as ingnorant as the next bugger, but it shits me to read about Sydney trains being referred to as Red Rattlers.

There were never any fucken Red Rattlers in Sydney. They were peculiar to Melbourne. I don't know what their official nomenclature was, but they were antiquated wooden cars, far more antique as compared to the sparks in Sydney.

This is what brought on the rant:

Beat ya too it

The Melbourne/Sydney thing could be another issue - I had never seen the melbourne ones until 'notch posted a pic this morning. I was brought up (in the 70s, might explain something) in the believe that pretty much any Sydney EMU before the R/S sets was a red rattler. Not fucking DMUs, or any bloody brand new train that happens to be single deck though.

Yes, I remember what they were called in the 70s:

"Suburban trains"

Sometimes, there'd be "Double Deckers!"

The irony of it all is that, the **ahem** "Red Rattlers" used to pull off feats of passenger movement and tph that they can't do eighty years later (eg. St James in the terminus days in the NINETEEN-FUCKING-THIRTIES!). And of course little things like nobody fainted from heat in them because you could open the windows and the ceiling wasn't touching your head, or the fact that the driver could take off on a rising grade without rolling back (can't do that easily on a 21st century EMU).

Yep, they think if they have a degree or something then they know more then the average person on the street. But they all ways seem to fuck it up every day in the papers and the average joe knows more then they do.

Yeah, sorry Bwana, you tricked me by hiding it in "Getting up People". Too late to delete this one now, so let two freds run in parallel.

I remember those red rattlers in Melbourne. Used to ride them when I was a young tad living down that way. It pisses me off seeing cunts misuse the name red rattler though.

Eh, I can split threads but unfortunately I can't merge the fuckers with this software. So, I'll do the next best thing and close this one down, directing all interested parties to Bwana's one instead.
