Bought Bwanette's christmas present yesterday, an all in one printer (Kodak 5500). Was playing around with it after we got it home and scanned a few old pics. Only 2 are rail related, so here they are:
XPT in Centenary of Federation livery - I travelled behind this home from Melbourne in January, uumm, 2002 maybe? For the record, Spencer Street station platform 1 is no good for morning shots, and Sydney Terminal platform 1 isn't much better for evening shots, so most of my shots whow a reasonably well lit nose and a pretty much black side. This is the exception:
Carraiges on display at Newnes - Newnes is a great spot for the archeologist or the lazy bastard that wants to sit on his arse and enjoy kick-arse scenery. Unfortunately the pub is no longer licenced, but if any bastards haven't been I'd recommend doing it before it gets ruined (there was a plan a few years back to build a 6-star resort roughly where the pub and these carraiges are. Don't know what came of it, but I haven't heard of it happening yet).
Disclaimer - these photos were taken from a VERY cheap and nasty camera (anyone remember Hanimex?), long before I learnt jack shit about photography. The intent in taking the photos was to say "I've been here", not to say "Hey, look how hot a photographer I am". _________________ It's Better to die on your feet than to live on your knees - Oils.

Everything's fine at Newnes, Bwana. The resort is about 10k's north of Newnes on the way in & about another 5k's off the road. They are currently rebuilding the road from Lidsdale to that point short of Newnes.
The new owners of the pub have sunk money in by building cabins & slowly restoring the pub. The carriges in your 'photo are still there & preserved. It's worth a look & stay at Newnes. You can either camp on the Pub's camping area at $35 per night (October long weekend) which includes access to flush toilets & a wheelbarrow's worth of firewood but no showers. You can have a wash in the river. There is free camping with compost toilets on the Pub side & on the rail side but you need a 4wd to get across the river.
Lot's to see & do, glow-worm tunnel if you're resonably fit or young & ruins of the old works.
Show great caution driving in down into the valley; narrow, windy & the workers from the resort knock off 3-5 pm but they probably notify those behind when passing you on CB's.
Check Newnes on the net (particularly Alan Watson's we site). _________________ Any club that wants me as a member, I don't want to join!! Groucho

Do you need a 4wd to get over Capertee Creek (between the pub and the NPWS campsite on the northern side of the river) now? Last time I was there (4 or 5 years back) a pool had formed where the creek crossed the road, it was pretty shallow though and I had no probs crossing it in my falcon.
The Wolgan River is another story though - used to be 2wd friendly up until a flood in the 90's. Now it's a bit silty and strong discouraged for 2wders. Easy to walk across though. _________________ It's Better to die on your feet than to live on your knees - Oils.

First a correction, the pub camping site was $35 for the October long weekend, not per night. It's $25 for a normal weekend.
I didn't try & cross the Capertee creek; there was no need to but I thought it possible without looking too closely. There's a drop to the creek I didn't like too much.
There is camping in the Park area without crossing the creek.
You're right, no crossing the Wolgan in 2wd.
It rained virtually all weekend so I didn't get to explore as much as I wanted but I did get to the Glow Worm Tunnel on Sunday afternoon.
We're planning a return trip & stay in the cabins with some friends who, with age, can't hack camping anymore. Weak as Piss. They are quite expensive but the capital costs of solar power & the flush toilet system would take a while to re-coup. _________________ Any club that wants me as a member, I don't want to join!! I thought it was Haminex? I'm probably wrong. My first camera was one of those long, thin flat buggers that took film cartridges...110 was the format from memory? I actually found it at the local tip complete with a brand new cartridge of film - I'd guess it was thrown out by accident. The first photo I took with it was of G511 on an Up grain at sunset; the photo actually turned out pretty good to my surprise. _________________ ALL HAIL HYPNO-TOAD!

It's Hanimex & they did go for the lower end of the market; having said that, they didn't make product themselves to my knowledge, they'd source from several manufacturers. Some of their lenses were surprisingly good depending on the third party that made them. Tokina, for instance supplied some of these lenses. _________________ Any club that wants me as a member, I don't want to join!! Groucho
