April 13th, 1939: line between Winton and Benalla closed a/c flooding caused by near-record ranfalls (this after Black Friday - so much for weather extremes being new) flooding over the track for a long section.
After the passage of the down Spirit and two freights, the third one, with A2 923, steams over the flooded area and manages to come off rather spectacularly somewheres between Benalla and Winton, making a rather massive mess of the track and the train.
July 31st, 2008: Steel train goes all over the place in similar area....
Wonder how many prangs or serious derailments have happened at the same place? _________________ That's an attention-getter!

Dunno the area, but the Abe was reporting they are having a cunt of a time (thusly: Rail authorities have issued a statement saying they are having a cunt of a time...) due to "the terrain". They can't easily get recovery vee-hickles in.

Very fucken muddy 'round there. The line drops down from Glenrowan to what's essentially a swamp.
Track's always had problems there - when the SG line was opened way back in 1962 the line was 80km/h for many years after the rest of the line had bedded in and rated at 100km/h as it was rather sinky there. _________________ That's an attention-getter!

It's just the regular derailment north of Benalla, happens every couple of years. _________________ I'm a pitiful sight, and I ain't all that bright

Isn't that the point of the thread? The line has derailments somewhat frequently compared to other lines...so debating condition of that section. My personal opinion: The section was fucked before rails were ever laid. _________________ http://photobucket.com/VBAndy
